Internet Impact on Music

Peter Spellman, an expert on the Internet's effect on the music industry, conferenced with us and i found his talk to be more than informative.
Some points he noted were:

The Recording Industry is taking the bulk of the negative effects of the internet, since it really only hinders their progress/profits.

The big record labels used to have a lock on distribution since they basically controlled which titles were carried in retail stores, but now that distribution has been simplified greatly by the internet (and is free), it is more advantageous in the current industry to be an independent artist than with a label.

I've taken a rather neutral view point of the internet so far, since although i see the harm it can do to artists with piracy so easy and whatnot, i also see the great advantages it can present when it comes to distribution of your media.
